On 1 September, NHTV opens the academic year in the Great Church in Breda, under the theme of ‘NHTV 50 years of excellence’. Marjolijn Uitzinger will be the day’s chair and Wim van de Donk, King’s Commissioner for the province of Noord-Brabant, will be one of the speakers. He will talk about ‘Entrepreneurship in Brabant & NHTV’.

NHTV’s roots go back to 1966, the year in which the Nederlands Wetenschappelijk Instituut voor Toerisme en Recreatie (NWIT) was founded in Breda. In 1987 the NWIT merged with Verkeersakademie Tilburg (VAT). Together they continued as Nationale hogeschool voor toerisme en verkeer – soon abbreviated to NHTV. The name changed in 2001: NHTV Internationaal hoger onderwijs Breda. From this time on, NHTV was no longer an abbreviation, but a brand name. In these 50 years, NHTV developed into an entrepreneurial and business-oriented institution of higher education which is considered to be an internationally renowned knowledge institution on the basis of the high quality of education and knowledge development. Nearly all NHTV’s study programmes rank first in their categories in the national rankings and some bachelors are even qualified as top rated programme. International accreditations from, for instance, the UN World Tourism Organization, the World Leisure Organization and the International Facility Management Association, underline the quality of education.

NHTV counts four locations in Breda, some 7,700 students from over 60 countries, offers professional and academic bachelor’s and master’s programmes in eight disciplines, and has no less than 27,000 alumni. NHTV is the only university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to offer both professional and academic bachelor’s programmes.
